Lesson 13 Interview de Sylvain Tesson
34:43Our world is increasingly connected.
Distances have disappeared thanks to rapid transportation, the internet, and social media.
Yet, paradoxically, loneliness has become the disease of the century.
So much so that in November 2023, the WHO created a commission “to address loneliness as an urgent health threat, prioritize social connections, and accelerate the scaling up of solutions in countries, regardless of their income level.”
Loneliness is often seen as something to be avoided at all costs, pushing us constantly to seek out company, even superficial, to escape our own company.
Let's face it, in a society where we are always connected and surrounded by people, being alone can sometimes be scary.
We often feel that if we are not constantly in contact with others, something is wrong.
And our lifestyles reinforce the idea that loneliness is synonymous with deprivation or failure.
Yet being alone can also be a good thing, a chance to discover ourselves and grow.
Loneliness can become a close friend, an inspiring muse that guides us toward self-reflection.
Sylvain Tesson has spent his life taming loneliness in order to cherish it more fully.
In this masterclass, he invites us to redefine our relationship with loneliness.
He suggests we see it not as a barrier between us and the world, but as a bridge to a deeper understanding of ourselves and the wonders that surround us.
As Shakespeare wrote, “There are more things in heaven and earth, Simon, than are dreamt of in our philosophy.”
With Sylvain Tesson as your guide, discover how to relearn how to see the wonders around you and transform solitude into a source of strength, inspiration, and balance.
Sylvain Tesson
A geographer by training, Sylvain Tesson is a travel writer. He travels the world and recounts his adventures in his travelogues.
He has followed the route of Siberian gulag escapees on foot to the Bay of Bengal, crossed the steppes of Central Asia on horseback, retraced the route of the Russian Retreat on a sidecar, pursued the mystery of energy around the Caspian Sea, and walked at an altitude of 5,000 meters on the passes of the Himalayas.
His travels fuel his inspiration. For him, the world holds more wonders than his imagination could ever produce.
His numerous expeditions, often carried out in extreme conditions, have inspired more than twenty books, including: Une vie à coucher dehors (A Life Spent Outdoors), winner of the 2009 Goncourt Prize for Short Stories,
Dans les forêts de Sibérie (In the Siberian Forests), winner of the 2011 Médicis Prize for essays, and La Panthère des neiges (The Snow Leopard), winner of the 2019 Renaudot Prize.

Beautifully expressed. Calm over fear. Feeling connection in out place in the universe. Lovely.
This was an interesting one. Probably very different from the rest of the courses. I didn't have a chance enjoying such a lecture since my time at university. So I'm grateful for the insights of a sensitive mind. As a solo traveller I took some notes and I'll start journaling based on Mr. Tesson's inputs.
